Why I Love Writing.

Ever since I was in the fifth grade, I have loved to write. Above my desk is a picture of my dad, my younger sister, and I contemplating the natural wonder and beauty that is Lake Kootenay in British Columbia, Canada. This photo is significant because it represents my very first real writing assignment. My fifth grade teacher had asked me to generate a short piece about a vacation, and my 10-year-old self was experiencing writer’s block, so my dad, the consummate English major, gave me some advice regarding the project.

Needless to say, even though my dad is a very gifted writer, I find that these days I do not need to turn to him—or anyone else— for help with my various writing projects. My high school, Foothill Tech in Ventura, had an excellent English program and I took all of the most advanced classes in that department there, which were major in shaping the writer that I am today. My college education at Occidental was also incredibly lucrative for me with regard to reading and writing.

In my over thirty-three years of life, I have found that writing has been an excellent way for me to communicate my many intellectual thoughts not only to others, but also to myself. When a thought is put down on paper, it transforms itself from an idea into something that is physical and tangible, and in a way arguably more real.

Another reason why I love writing so much is that I am very good at it. It is incredibly rewarding, and often relatively easy, for me to write. I like to think that I have mastered both fiction and nonfiction. I have always gotten good grades on my various essays in school, and my ultimate goal is to one day see my name in print at a bookstore. This may soon become a reality because I am currently working on my science fiction novel, titled Parapenda. I firmly believe that this piece, which will be the longest one I have ever written to date, will become incredibly popular almost overnight once it is eventually published.

I feel very strongly that the pen is mightier than the sword. The written word has power: the power to inform, the power to persuade, and even the power to start and end wars. Behind every story is a gifted writer who engineered it.

Each and every time I write a blog post for this site, I pinch myself and say, “I can’t believe I get to do something as rewarding as this for work!” When I was a child, my parents told me that I should seek out a career that I would enjoy and find to be fulfilling. Writing is most definitely an ideal option for me.
