About My Favorite Song.

I still remember as if it were yesterday the moment I was first introduced to Lady Gaga. I was driving my younger sister home from her karate practice, and, all of a sudden, this song came up on the radio. Almost immediately, my attention was piqued. The rhythm was just so upbeat and invigorating, and after a few seconds, my sister called out: “Oh, that’s Lady Gaga!”

I of course wouldn’t have known that unless she had said something—so as soon as we got home, I went on Google and determined that the song in question was called “Yoü And I.” I then visited YouTube and watched the music video for this piece dozens of times, until I had the lyrics memorized. I then purchased the song. Many years after, this work continues to be the best piece of music I have ever listened to.

Whenever I play Yoü And I in front of my friends and family, they always joke and say, “Wow, I haven’t heard that one before!” Anyone who spends time around me has heard this song, probably literally hundreds of times. No matter how many times I listen, I still simply cannot get tired of this piece. A few years ago, I even printed out the lyrics and thumbtacked them to my bedroom wall. On YouTube, I have discovered multiple videos depicting Lady Gaga performing Yoű And I live; in front of different crowds and in different variations. Needless to say I have watched them all.

Why do I like this song so much? Well, every time I listen to it I just feel so upbeat. If it follows another piece on my playlist, then that previous song all of the sudden just feels inferior. Nothing can beat the magic of Lady Gaga. To summarize: Yoü And I is a love song that Gaga wrote about one of her ex-fiancés. The lyrics just exude love. Take a look at this excerpt, for instance: “It's been a long time since I came around/Been a long time, but I'm back in town/This time I'm not leaving without you.” It is almost as though Gaga is recalling a past location where she had first met her lover, and is determined to return to that place in order to consecrate her relationship with him. She will not leave that venue again without him by her side. This, to me, is the ultimate manifestation of love, and created by an artist who is very affectionate and loving herself, and who of course is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community as I also am.

Yoü And I is the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard, and I do not expect it to be dethroned anytime soon, or ever. By the way, if this post has piqued your interest, please feel free to watch the music video appended below. I would love to hear if you find this song to be as moving as I do. It is an honor and a privilege for me to listen to this mellifluous piece, and it will always be this way.
